Why do Frenchies need to Wear Clothes?

French Bulldogs, particularly puppies have very little body fat.  Additionally, french bulldogs are short haired dogs.  Furthermore, their fur is not very dense.  Due to the fact frenchies are short haired and have very little body fat, they need to wear clothes or a sweater from time to time.  Is it really a bad thing?  No way, who wouldn't want the chance to make the cutest dog in the world a smidgeon cuter.   

When Should My French Bulldog Wear Clothes?

Your french bulldog will need to wear clothes when going outside in the fall, winter, and early spring months.  As a rule of thumb, if you need to wear a jacket they do too.  Frenchies are closer to the floor in your home than you are.  Hot air rises so cooler air is always closer to the floor.  Therefore, if you feel a chill at your height, your frenchie definitely feels a chill down at their height.  It is best to put your french bulldog in a light sweater before bed each night.  If they sleep in a warm bed with you, it may not be necessary.  However, if they sleep on the floor it is definitely recommended to put them in a little sweater.   

Helping your adorable little French Bulldog maintain their temperature is a delicate balance.  Frenchies are also sensitive to the heat.  They are a short nosed breed so they have to work harder to breathe normally.  Therefore, they can overheat easily.  A french bulldog should never wear clothes when it is warm.  They will overheat quickly in the summer so they should not be left outside in the heat for prolonged periods.               

Helpful Tips

French Bulldogs are an intelligent breed.  Additionally, they are eager to please, goof off, and show off.  One of the most creatively adorable solutions to help solve the issue of a cold frenchie is to put a small coat hook at their level out of the way.  Then hang a sweater on the coat hook.  That way they have the ability to grab their sweater and bring it to you when they are cold.  It also helps to have a cozy blanket in their sleep space that will allow them to nuzzle into it.  The cozy blanket allows them to have a choice whether or not to cover themselves.
